ROUND UP: DAY 6 AS IT HAPPENED

Day 6 and it’s the last day of group games and in action were teams in Group C and D. We had two games at 1pm and two games at 5pm that decided the nations final positions and who had progressed into the Quarter Finals that are to be played on Wednesday 24 June.

In one of the first games of the day Argentina produced an incredible late fight back to draw 3-3 with Northern Ireland and ensure that they finished as runners-up in Group D.

Two goals in the last four minutes from captain Rodrigo Lugrin and substitute Mariano Morana cancelled out efforts from David Leavy, Ryan Walker and Jordan Walker. Argentina’s first goal was an own goal. The final score was Argentina 3-3 Northern Ireland.

The Netherlands cemented top spot in Group D with a 4-1 victory over Canada. The result was cruel on Canada who despite producing a brave display, sadly failed to progress to the Quarter Finals.

Canada went in front in the opening minute with a goal from Sam Charron but the ninth minute saw Canada’s Matt Brown sent off for bringing down Visker which meant Canada playing with six men for the remainder of the game. The Netherlands came back with Visker scoring in the 25th minute and then Krooij, Saedt and Conijn all in the second half. The game ended Canada 1-4 Netherlands.

A Martin Hickman hat-trick and goals from Jamie Mitchell and Darren Aitken helped Scotland storm to a 5-0 victory over Venezuela and secure 3rd place in Group C.

With both teams vying to record their first win at the tournament, Scotland came flying out of the traps and broke the deadlock less than 20 seconds into the match before going on to score their five goals. Final score was Scotland 5-0 Venezuela.

Brazil breezed past the USA to clinch top spot in Group C and set up tantalising Quarter Final tie with bitter-rivals, Argentina. The USA couldn’t cope with Brazil’s speed of play as the Samba style lit up St George’s Park much to the enjoyment of the crowd.

Scorers for Brazil was Ubirajara, Wanderson with two including a penalty, Fernandes, Carlos with two goals and birthday-boy Felipe Rafael broke clear to make it a third consecutive win. The game ended USA 0-6 Brazil.

Today’s results mean that the Quarter Finals for Group C and D will look as follows: Netherlands v USA at 10:30am and Brazil v Argentina at 1pm on Wednesday 24 June.

Argentina 3 - 3 Northern Ireland

Argentina produced an incredible late fight back to draw 3-3 with Northern Ireland and ensure that they finished as runners-up in Group D.

Two goals in the last four minutes from captain Rodrigo Lugrin and substitute Mariano Morana cancelled out efforts from David Leavy, Ryan Walker and Jordan Walker. Argentina’s first goal was an own goal.

The South American’s comeback, combined with Canada’s collapse against group winners Holland, means that Argentina take second place and a place in the quarter finals, where they will meet the winner of Group C.

Straight from the kick-off, Northern Ireland’s Ryan Walker tricked his way past the Argentine defence and attempted to lift the ball over the on-rushing Claudio Figuera, fortunately Pablo Molina was well-placed to prevent Northern Ireland racing into an early lead.

Northern Ireland continued to enjoy the better of the early exchanges and deservedly took the lead inside 10 minutes. Cormac Birt’s corner was met by Leavy, whose looping effort found the net despite a desperate last-ditch attempt to clear from Matias Bassi.

It wasn’t until the 23rd minute that Argentina began to gain a foothold in the game; Bassi released Mariano Cortes down the left flank, and he produced a pinpoint cross for Northern Ireland to put in the back of their own net.

Hesitation in Argentina’s defence almost handed Northern Ireland the lead back instantly. Cortes’ poor defensive header presented Birt with the chance, but he could only fire tamely at Figuera.

However, Northern Ireland did regain the lead on the stroke of half time; Birt’s lofted ball was well controlled by Ryan Walker, the striker then fired under Figuera to cap a superb first half performance.

Northern Ireland almost extended their lead immediately after the interval; Jordan Walker broke and exchanged passes with Jordan Cush before stinging the palms of substitute ‘keeper Gustavo Nahuelquin.

Northern Ireland did increase their lead after 45 minutes; Birt’s pullback found Jordan Walker at the far post. The midfielder produced a clinical finish, leaving Nahuelquin clutching at thin air.

Argentina would have pulled a goal back had it not been for the wonderful reflexes of Conor Lewesley. Fernandez found Cortes with the goal at his mercy, but the goalkeeper stretched to tip the strike around the post.

Lewesley was at it again shortly, his acrobatics preventing Morana from reducing the deficit. But Argentina did give themselves hope when Lugrin headed home Cortes’ corner with four minutes remaining.

Argentina would not be denied and Morana equalised in the 59th minute after his effort from distance took a cruel deflection off Shea Tighe to spark mass celebrations in the Argentine dugout.

There was still time for Northern Ireland to almost break Argentine hearts in stoppage time; Lewesley’s huge clearance was raced onto by Jordan Walker, but Nahuelquin thwarted the forward to set up a tie with either USA or arch rivals Brazil in the next round.

CANADA 1 - 4 NETHERLANDS

The Netherlands cemented top spot in Group D with a 4-1 victory over Canada in the Cerebral Palsy Football World Championships at St George’s Park.

The result was cruel on Canada who despite producing a brave display, sadly failed to progress to the Quarter Finals.

They did, however, get off to an amazing start when Liam Stanley picked up a loose ball in midfield and instinctively fed John Phillips who squared the ball to Sam Charron who stroked the ball past goalkeeper George Van Altena in the opening minute.

Marcel Geestman’s team responded with Jeroen Saedt shooting straight at Trevor Stiles and Iljas Visker striking a half volley narrowly wide.

Visker was a constant menace to the Canadian defence and so it proved in the ninth minute when through on goal he was brought down by defender Matt Brown. Referee Carlos Dias had no alternative but to show Brown a red card, leaving Canada with six men.

To their immense credit Canada defended resolutely after the sending off, with Stiles, Phillips and Vito Proietti all making crucial blocks to preserve their lead.

But their resistance was broken in the 25th minute, when Netherlands Captain, Lars Conijn played the ball to Visker who turned his marker and struck a powerful shot past Stiles into the top left corner.

Stiles continued to thwart the Dutch in the second half when he made a superb save from Saedt. While at the other end Charron came close to doubling his and his teams tally when after a solo run he forced a good save from Van Altena.

The Netherlands could be forgiven for thinking that it was going to be one of those days until the 49th minute when Peter Krooij fired superbly past Stiles after good link up play with Saedt.

Canada continued to throw men forward but it was the Netherlands added two more goals in stoppage time, thanks to Saedt and Conijn. Both of whom finished off with good passing moves with fine strikes to give Stiles no chance.

SCOTLAND 5 - 0 VENEZUELA

A Martin Hickman hat-trick and goals from Jamie Mitchell and Darren Aitken helped Scotland storm to a 5-0 victory over Venezuela and secure 3rd place in Group C.

With both teams vying to record their first win at the tournament, Scotland came flying out of the traps and broke the deadlock less than 20 seconds into the match. Frank Renee Pineda Teran saved well to deny Mark Robertson but the Venezuelan keeper was helpless as Martin Hickman buried the rebound.

Scotland had numerous opportunities to extend their lead in the opening 10 minutes but were thwarted time after time by Pineda Teran. The shot-stopper first prevented Kyle Hannin’s close range effort and was on hand once again to parry Mark Robertson’s attempt to safety.
Blair Glynn almost doubled his side’s advantage, connecting sweetly with Hannin’s free-kick, but watched as his strike flashed just wide of the post.

Saul Eliecer Torres Villegas received an early caution from the referee for bringing down Robertson right on the edge of the area and Hickman almost added to his tally from the resulting free-kick. He curled the ball low around the wall but Pineda Teran got a strong hand to his strike.

Venezuela’s first opening fell to Asdrubal Eusebio de Jesus Olivares Mora as he rose highest to meet a corner but failed to direct his header goal bound.

Andrew Smith’s side should have been 2-0 up in the 23rd minute. Marcos Tulio Cardenas Nieto conceded a free-kick, Hickman stepped up to take and an unmarked Jonathan Paterson side-footed wide with the goal gaping.

Scotland, ranked eighth in the world, maximised their dominance in the 24th minute as Hickman grabbed his second of the afternoon with a fine solo effort, charging forward before drilling the ball into the back of the net.

Daniel Enrique Sanchez came close to halving the deficit on the stroke of half-time but his long range effort sailed just over.

Scotland were back on the front foot after the restart and substitute Jamie Mitchell had an immediate impact, getting his name on the scoresheet in the 40th minute after his shot cannoned in off the post.

The Scots continued to dominate and the pressure on the Venezuelan goal was unrelenting. Substitute Darren Aitken extended his side’s lead, driving home to make it 4-0, before Hickman completed his hat-trick to bring the score to 5-0.

The result means that Scotland will now face Northern Ireland in the next round, while Venezuela will come up against Canada. Both ties are set to be played on Tuesday 23rd June.

USA 0 - 6 BRAZIL

Brazil breezed past the USA to clinch top spot in Group C and set up tantalising Quarter Final tie with bitter-rivals, Argentina.

The USA couldn’t cope with Brazil’s speed of play as the Samba style lit up St George’s Park much to the enjoyment of the crowd.

Wednesday will now see the Netherlands, who topped Group D face the USA at 10:30, with Brazil and Argentina meeting shortly after at 13:00 for spots in the semi-finals.

Brazil started brightly, with Jan Francisco testing Keith Johnson’s reflexes during opening exchanges with a low drive, which Johnson palmed behind for a corner.

Jose Carlos also went close in the fifth minute, with a left footed strike from an acute angle within the box, which Johnson collected well.

But the tenth minute saw the American’s resistance broken. After a silky interchange between Wanderson and Jan Francisco, the ball took a ricochet off Bryce Boarman, falling to an unmarked Ubirajara, who couldn’t miss from a yard out.

Brazil made it two just four minutes later. A superb team effort saw Jan Fransico, Fernandes and Ronaldo all combine before the wand took charge. A precise left-footed strike from Wanderson found the far corner, to grab his second goal of the championships.

A thunderous third followed shortly. Wanderson teed off his captain, Fernandes, who let loose from distance, the shot sailing into the corner from 25 yards out, to give Brazil a commanding lead.

USA threatened to gain a foothold in the match, with David Garza finding himself in space within the Brazilian area, but keeper, Marcos was out in a flash to close the danger and keep Brazil’s record of not conceding in the tournament so far intact.

Wanderson had the Brazilian magic oozing from him, setting up Jose Carlos with a deft touch after beating two USA defenders, but Keith denied Brazil’s tournament top-scorer superbly.

Jose Carlos did get his goal moments later. Jan Francisco spread the play to Fernandes, who laid it on a plate for Carlos, who tapped in his fifth goal of the tournament and Brazil’s fourth of the day.

The second half didn’t start much better for the USA, as Brazil made it five in the thirty-seventh minute. After a lofted ball into the box from Jan Francisco, Johnson came to punch the ball clear, but only caught Ronaldo with the effort. Referee, Carlos Dias pointed straight to the spot, Wanderson stepped up and dispatched effortlessly into the corner, sending Johnson the wrong way.

Brazil nearly made it six within seconds of the restart, as substitute, Wesley peppered the American crossbar with an in-swinging cross-cum-shot.

Jordan Weise nearly earned a consolation for the US in the fifty-first minute, with a powerful left-footed strike from distance, which Marcos tipped behind for a corner.

But there wasn’t to be any joy for the USA as birthday-boy Felipe Rafael broke clear to make it a third consecutive 6-0 win for Brazil, as they completed their Group C demolition.
